One of the hardest things in the world of creative arts is to sit down with a blank sheet of paper (or blank computer screen) and write a novel.
I didn’t realize that until I was three pages into a story that had no plot, no ending, thin characters, and poor imaging. All I had was an urge to write, nothing more.
In essence, I was lost. I needed a compass, or at least a stream of thought to follow.
So I did what so many fiction writers do these days, although at first I considered it to be a cop-out: I purchased software to kick my creative brain into gear.
After a steep learning curve, I managed to complete 80% of the story-forming process, and at that point I was able to go on without further help.
I no longer consider writing software to be a cop-out. In fact, just the opposite. It’s a damn important tool that is readily available in many forms, and the price ranges from the FREE to the more expensive. Elaborate is not always the best, especially for the novice..
Whatever your pocketbook, it is in your best interest to investigate what kind of software is out there. Since my interest tends towards novel writing, I’ve listed a few software programs you might want to look into, but there are many others. Do some web surfing, find a software program you can be comfortable with, and then do whatever you have to do to get it. In the end, it’s worth it.
